Membership Questions
Do I have to lend clothing to borrow clothing?
No — but it's encouraged. The Borrow + Lend membership tier ($5–10/month) is the heart of the co-op model and what keeps the closet growing. If you're not ready to lend yet, the Borrow Only tier ($10–15/month) is available. The Lender Only tier is free for members who want to contribute without a borrowing commitment.
Where does my membership fee go?
100% of membership fees go toward server costs and keeping the platform running. Common Thread Closet is not profit-driven. We are a community resource — your fee is a contribution to its existence.
Can I cancel or pause my membership?
Yes. You can cancel anytime. We're building this with care, not lock-ins. If life gets in the way, just let us know and we'll work with you. During beta, reach out directly and we'll handle it personally.
Why do you use real names?
Because trust is the foundation of this whole thing. When you know you're borrowing from a real person — and they know who you are — it changes how you treat their things. It also makes community feel like community, not a transaction. Real names create accountability and connection.
Borrowing
How long can I borrow a piece?
Borrow durations are set by the lender in each listing. Typical durations range from a few days to a couple of weeks. Always read the listing carefully — and if you need more time, communicate with the lender directly before the return date.
What if something is damaged while I have it?
Communicate immediately and honestly — with the lender first, then with us if needed. We handle damage situations on a case-by-case basis with care for everyone involved. Accidents happen; what matters is how we show up when they do. Trying to hide damage is the only thing that breaks the community agreement.
How do I actually get the item — is there shipping or pickup?
During beta, logistics are handled directly between borrower and lender. NYC-based members often arrange neighborhood handoffs or meetups. We're building out more structured pickup and drop-off options as we grow — and your feedback through the beta will shape how that works.
What sizes are available?
Common Thread Closet is designed primarily for plus-size individuals — meaning the closet is intentionally stocked with extended sizes. During beta, available sizes will depend on what members contribute. As the community grows, so does the closet. If you're not seeing your size yet, stay in — it's coming.
Lending
What kind of items can I list?
Clothing in clean, wearable condition — tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, occasion wear, activewear. No undergarments or swimwear (for hygiene reasons). Accessories like bags, belts, and scarves are welcome. If you're not sure, ask — we'd rather you list it and we figure it out together.
Can I take a listing down at any time?
Yes — as long as it's not currently out on a borrow. If a piece is with a borrower, wait for its return before deactivating the listing. Your closet is yours.
What if a borrower doesn't return my item on time?
Message them first — life happens and most situations are easily resolved. If you're not getting a response, flag it to us and we'll step in. We take lending trust seriously and will support lenders through late returns or disputes.
Community & Beta
Do I have to be a Power Plus Wellness member to join?
No — but the beta launch is happening within the PPW community first, because trust already exists there. We're prioritizing PPW members during the beta period. Future rounds will open more broadly. Apply now and we'll be in touch.
What does 'beta' actually mean?
It means we're building this together. The platform works — but we're still learning what the community needs, testing logistics, and shaping the experience based on real member feedback. Being a beta member means your voice genuinely shapes what Common Thread Closet becomes. It also means some things are still being figured out, and we appreciate your patience and input.
Is this just for NYC?
Yes — intentionally. Common Thread Closet is hyper-local by design. The trust, the handoffs, the events — all of it works better when we're in the same neighborhoods. Future expansion is possible, but we're building this right before we build it big.
